The Greek government should take lessons from the past, said Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar on Saturday while visiting the Turkish-occupied zone in northern Cyprus.
Akar was accompanied by the entire leadership of the Turkish armed forces. He visited the former resort city of Famagusta, where he addressed the Turkish generals, stressing that “Cyprus is our national issue. Everyone should know this and not make mistakes.”
Akar also declared “when we speak about peace, they consider it a weakness. When we say we will not allow things (against our interests) it is taken as a threat. That is why our neighbors need to pick up their minds and see things objectively.
“To date we have exercised all our obligations as a guarantor force and will continue to do so. And to do so, the presence of the Turkish Armed Forces on the island is essential. Everyone should know this,” he added.
The Turkish minister also said “our view on the Cyprus issue is as it was 45 years ago. The new Greek government should be objective and take lessons from the past and try not to bring the facts to non-resolution, but to move forward and resolve issues.”
Akar also stated that his country is in favor of good, neighborly relations in the Aegean, the Eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus.
