The fire that broke out on Saturday on Elafonisos island was rekindled, while the second front of blazes appeared on Sunday afternoon.
Due to the seriousness of the situation, General Secretary for Civil protection Nikos Hardalias along with a Special Units for Disaster Management team rushed to the island.
According to public television (ERT) reports, the fire has approached several houses and the beach camps. Simos has been evacuated for the second time. The Panagia area has also been evacuated.
Strong winds are blowing on the island, making the task of extinguishing fire difficult, while ground forces fighting flames are stepping up.
At present, 90 firefighters are operating with 19 vehicles, three Canadair aircrafts, three PZL planes, and four helicopters and several volunteers.
According to Laconia Deputy Governor Adamantia Tzanetea, there are no people injured or trapped in the flames.
Tzanetea spoke to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency saying that a large number of visitors are at the port waiting to leave the island and expressed sadness that the fire has not only caused major environmental damage but also economic damage to the island.
