Smoke From Εvia Wildfires Blankets Athens

Greek authorities on Tuesday warned Athens citizens, especially the elderly and infirm, to protect themselves from the smoke caused by wildfires raging on Evia Island. The thick, gray pall of smoke is now blanketing the entire region of Attica.
The general secretariat of Greece’s Civil Protection authority issued an urgent announcement warning of the dangers of breathing in the smoke, and advised vulnerable individuals to stay at home and use their air conditioning to clean the air.

The general secretary of Civil Protection, Nikos Hardalis, has also arrived at the village of Psahna on Evia to coordinate the firefighting operations there.
A total of sixty-six fire engines with 189 firefighters, seven other crews of firemen traveling to the hotspots on foot, six firefighting aircraft and five water-dropping helicopters are currently battling the blaze.
Local residents on Evia are prepared to abandon their villages and towns if they are directly threatened by the fires.
