Heartbreaking Videos of Evia's Natura 2000 Forest Reduced to Ashes

The “Natura 2000” forest in central Evia was turned into blackened hulks of tree trunks after a large fire broke out after 3 AM local time on Tuesday. The destruction of the area continues on Wednesday, with crews battling the fires in several locations.
The burned forest is one of the 19 designated “aesthetic forests” of Greece, and is a protected site belonging to the Natura 2000 network.
The forest includes alpine pine trees, European chestnut trees, Cephalonian firs, oaks, and Eastern plane trees, as well as many wild flowers, including peonies and primulas. Rarely-seen birds, such as peregrines and snake eagles, are also known to live in the forest there.
Places named as Natura 2000 sites are intended to protect areas considered as essential habitat for certain species of flora and fauna.
Special types of habitat are also considered for protection under the Habitats Directive and the Birds Directive, which are a part of the Natura 2000 program. These species and habitats considered to be important because they are threatened by extinction, or are vulnerable, rare or native to that one area.
Their selection into the Nature 200 program is based on accepted scientific research and evidence.
The following videos show the extent of the devastating blaze on the island of Evia, as the once-verdant area has been reduced to ashes and hulks of smoldering trees.

Δεν υπάρχει κάτι να έχει μείνει όρθιο εδώ… 😢🔥🌲
