Two Suspects Arrested After Crash that Killed Six Migrants in Greece

Greek police said on Tuesday that they have arrested two foreign nationals who are suspected of people-smuggling after six migrants were killed in an overcrowded vehicle which veered into a ditch off a road near the Turkish border on Monday.
According to the police, sixteen individuals had been crammed into what police described as a “jeep-like vehicle,” heading towards the Greek town of Alexandroupolis.
The victims are all men, believed to be migrants from Pakistan and Egypt.
Officials have recorded a sharp increase in the deaths of migrants and asylum seekers from traffic accidents occurring near the Evros River border between Turkey and Greece. This area has become a popular migration crossing point since 2018.
More than a quarter of all the migrant deaths in mainland Europe in 2018 were due to road accidents in Greece, according to UN figures.
