New Clashes Erupt Between Police and Anarchists in Downtown Athens

One person was reportedly injured during clashes between police and anarchists groups in the Athenian district of Exarchia on Thursday night.
The clashes erupted at the anarchist squat called “Vox,” where the group claim the police threw tear gas at them, injuring the person who was rushed to a local hospital. Police have not confirmed the injury.
Seven suspects were arrested after hood-wearing individuals attacked riot police stationed in the area with fire bombs and other objects.
The police have launched a series of raids since the beginning of August Exarchia on squats that have long been occupied by anarchist groups.
One of the main campaign themes of Greece’s New Democracy party, which swept into power in a landslide in July, was a promise to “restore law and order” by evicting all 23 refugee and anarchist squats in Exarchia.
Ringed by university buildings, the neighborhood of Exarchia has long been the home of Greece’s intellectual left, as well as antiauthoritarian and anarchist movements.
On Monday, a total of 134 asylum seekers were evicted from occupied buildings in the area and transferred to temporary accommodations elsewhere.
