The President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades told reporters on Friday evening in New York that Cyprus will appeal to the UN Security Council over Turkish plans to reopen the ghost town of Varosha in Famagusta next week.
During his statement on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, President Anastasiades offered dinner to the representatives of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council (UNSC) to inform them about the situation on the Cyprus problem and Turkey’s declared intentions to open Varosha in Famagusta, something that is in direct violation of two UNSC resolutions; the 550 and 789 alike.
Cyprus’ appeal intends to reaffirm the UNSC’s position on the issue, that strictly asks the Turkish occupying forces to hand over the dead zone in Famagusta to the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus instead of keeping it under its command.
President Anastasiades also had a meeting on Friday with the UN Secretary-General (UNSG) Antonio Guterres. There, Anastasiades informed the UNSG about the ongoing Turkish provocations inside the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone and other issues relating to Turkey’s behavior on the island.
President Anastasiades said that the UNSG is willing to initiate a new round of tripartite negotiations between Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots and the UN as well as a quinquepartite negotiation, including Greece and Turkey in the near future, in an effort to revitalize hopes for a solution to the long-lasting Cyprus problem.
The tripartite negotiation is expected to begin as early as mid-October, according to the President.
President Anastasiades also informed the press about a series of meetings he held with other world leaders, including the Prime Minister of India and North Macedonia as well as the President of Egypt, during his stay in New York.
