A car crash took place on Sunday morning on the old highway of Kavala-Thessaloniki, involving a car which was carrying migrants.
According to EKAB, Greece’s Emergency Service, a 64-year-old Greek man died as a result of the crash.
The car, which was carrying twelve undocumented migrants, ran a red light and hit another car at the intersection of Saint Basil (Agios Vasilios) and Hortiatis Streets, near the city of Thessaloniki.
The driver of the car which was struck died, and six of the migrants were injured.
The 25-year old smuggler, a national of Moldova, attempted to escape but police officers were able to catch him and arrest him.
Witnesses claimed that the driver of the car which was smuggling the migrants saw a police car approaching; he sped up for this reason, ultimately causing the fatal accident.
It is noted that this is not the first time illegal immigrants are being smuggled into northern Greece. There are numerous incidents where smugglers have transported migrants to Thessaloniki so that they can later be transferred to other parts of the country.
