Massive Shelf Cloud Threatens Skies Above Athens, Greece

As weather conditions in Greece have continued to deteriorate since the early hours of Thursday, a massive storm cloud was spotted in the skies above Athens on Thursday afternoon.
The sudden autumnal rain didn’t last very long and it wasn’t exceptionally heavy.
However, many people spotted a gigantic cloud formation above the Greek capital and rushed to take some pictures of this rare — for Athens — phenomenon.
Social media was flooded with pictures of the enormous cloud darkening the heavens over  the city, which was visible all the way from Euboea to the westernmost parts of Attica.
Meteorologists have warned that heavy rainfall is expected to fall in most parts of the country on Thursday and Friday.
The cloud spotted over Athens is called a ”shelf cloud” and is is a low-hanging, and well-defined, formation which normally accompanies thunderstorms.
