Greece Warns North Macedonia it Must Adhere to Prespa Agreement

The Greek government will “continue to closely monitor” North Macedonia’s full adherence to its obligations according to the Prespa Agreement, Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said on Tuesday.
Charging North Macedonia’s Prime Minister Zoran Zaev with “once again taking advantage of the loopholes in the Prespa Agreement, which we knew and had warned about,” Dendias added that the neighboring country was already in the process of joining NATO.
“Our goal is to resolve issues and mitigate the agreement’s negative repercussions” through North Macedonia’s EU accession path, he explained, adding that “in this respect, we shall continue to closely monitor our neighbors’ full respect of their obligations.”
On Monday, Zoran Zaev, the Prime Minister of North Macedonia, warned that the Prespa Agreement could be in danger due to the EU’s decision not to begin accession negotiations with the Balkan Republic.
“There is a link between the implementation of the Agreement and the opening and closing of accession chapters; especially for domestic use in some cases,” Zaev said in an interview with the television network Euronews.
Greece’s conservative government, although highly critical of the name deal between the two countries while in opposition, has nevertheless vowed to respect the agreement. It has stated that the agreement is now bound by international law.
