Passenger traffic in Greek airports grew by 5.1 percent in the period from January – October this year, totaling 60,262,301 passengers, the Greek Civil Aviation Authority said in a report on Thursday.
This figure is an increase from the 57,350,192 passengers who were recorded using air transportation in Greece during the same period last year.
The authority said that the number of flights in and out of Greek airports totaled 491,389 in the 10-month period, of which 187,332 were domestic and 304,057 international.
This represented an increase of 4.3 percent compared with the corresponding period of 2018.
The report showed that Ioannina airport in Epirus recorded the largest increase percentage-wise in passenger traffic, reaching 27.5 percent, or 117,592 total passengers.
Ioannina was followed by the city of Naxos, with an increase of 22.1 percent or 98,050 passengers, and Kalamata, with a 20.6 percent increase, amounting to 327,567 total passengers.
In October, air passenger traffic in Greece as a whole totaled 5,782,940, representing an increase of 7.6 percent compared with the same month last year, while the number of flights in Greek airports rose by 5.4% to 47,332.
International passenger arrivals totaled 1,870,027 in October, up 8.4 percent from 2018, an impressive increase since this is just outside of the usual tourist season.
The airports in Athens, Heraklion, Thessaloniki, Rhodes, and Chania recorded the largest passenger traffic increases in October of 2019.
It is noted that 2018 was also a record-breaking year, making 2019’s increase an even more impressive achievement.
