Greece's Centrist To Potami Party to Officially Suspend Operations

The centrist ”To Potami” (The River) party announced on Monday that its Political Council will propose the suspension of the party’s operations at the standing congress to be held on November 24.
The party, which was formed in 2014 by acclaimed journalist Stavros Theodorakis, enjoyed very positive ratings and high popularity during its first years of existence.
To Potami received 6.6 percent of the vote in the European Parliamentary elections of 2014, electing two MEPs who joined the voting bloc of the Socialists and Democrats.
In the national elections of January 2015, To Potami received 6.1 percent, electing 17 Members of Parliament. However, during the elections of September 2015, its share dropped to 4.1 percent, and it was able to elect only 11 MPs.
The party joined the ”KINAL” party in 2017 but left the center-left coalition just a few months later due to disagreements about a range of issues with the rest of the parties which made up KINAL.
The party did not participate in the July, 2019 snap election and therefore has no Parliamentary representation at the present time.
The Political Council’s text, however, leaves open the possibility that the party may be re-established at some point in the future, “when conditions change and the times demand,” so that it ”can help the country.”
The To Potami Political Council has agreed to donate the party’s state subsidy of 500,000 euros to the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and it proposes that the Council’s Chair be authorized to ask Parliament to suspend the party’s state funding.
