UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres will host an informal dinner on Monday evening for Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci to discuss the next steps to be taken regarding the Cyprus issue.
The dinner will take place at Hotel Adlon Kempinski, located just a few meters away from the Brandenburg Gate and the site where the Berlin Wall once divided the city into two parts.
The two leaders arrived separately at the German capital on Sunday, accompanied only by their negotiators and close associates. They are also staying at the same hotel, while Guterres is expected to arrive later today.
President Anastasiades has repeatedly expressed his political will to conclude the terms of reference which will pave the way for the resumption of settlement talks for the desired reunification of the island.
The German government supports the resumption of negotiations as well as the trilateral meeting to take place later on Monday in the country’s capital.
A spokesperson for the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Monday that Berlin supports the trilateral meeting both financially and technically, in order to provide whatever conditions are necessary to create an undisturbed, neutral meeting place.
The spokesperson said Germany was in favor of the resumption of talks for a Cyprus settlement, adding that the United Nations will announce at the end of the meetings if there has been any progress made.
European Community Chief Spokesperson Mina Andreeva reiterated today from Brussels that the European Commission stressed its desire and sincere hopes for a successful outcome of the talks.
Monday’s talks will be informal, without the presence of any representatives from the three Cyprus guarantor powers — Greece, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.
