Nineteen Companies and Institutions ''Adopt'' Athens' Streets for Public Christmas Decoration

A total of nineteen businesses, institutions and associations recently ”adopted” avenues and streets in the Greek capital to sponsor the Christmas decorations for this year.
Following an invitation issued by mayor of Athens Costas Bakoyannis, representatives of these companies and institutions gathered together in City Hall, where they discussed the holiday lighting program with the mayor.
Ten years of financial upheaval and multiple riots during the early years of the crisis, as well as a generalized atmosphere of depression which accompanied the country’s financial woes, had made the public face of Athens look a bit worn.
The capital’s Christmas decorations for the last several years had been admittedly fairly basic, with no inspiration at all, reusing lights and ornaments from the previous decade.

#adoptathens #lightupathens

The new mayor intends to begin the long process of reversing this situation by gathering support and new creative ideas from the community and businesses to spruce up this year’s public Christmas decorations.
Each one of the nineteen businesses and institutions will be responsible for the decoration of an entire neighborhood, or just an avenue or a street. The municipality will assist where needed and will make sure there is an aesthetic continuity to the result.

A total of thirty public squares in the Greek capital will be decorated this year, along with 81 streets and avenues across the city of Athens.
