UN High Commissioner Warns Greece Could Face ''Dramatic Consequences'' on Migration

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said on Thursday that Greece could face ”dramatic consequences” due to the refugee and migrant crisis.
Grandi spoke during a joint meeting of the Committees on National Defense and Foreign Affairs along with that of Public Administration, Public Order and Justice.
The UN official said that the situation on Lesvos is worse compared to four years ago, and noted that this comes as a result of the overcrowded conditions that Moria camp faces.
During his visit on Lesvos on Wednesday, Grandi urged Europe to help Greece to improve conditions in refugee camps.
On his behalf, Greece’s Alternate Minister for Migration Policy George Koumoutsakos said during the Parliamentary meeting that Athens will soon submit to the EU a plan for a ”robust” mechanism with which Europe will be able to return migrants back to their countries of origin.
Koumoutsakos noted that ”Greece has its limits” and explained the ways the Greek government is cooperating with other neighboring countries such as Cyprus, Italy, Malta and Bulgaria to tackle the issue.
