Beautiful Scenes from Cyprus as First Snow of the Season Arrives

The island nation of Cyprus saw its first snow for this winter season as a light blanket of snow covered the higher altitudes of Mount Troodos on Monday morning.
Cypriots, of course, are not used to snow as a rule, since their island is located so far south in the Mediterranean and is among Europe’s most popular summertime destinations.
However, villages located in the higher altitudes of Cyprus’ Troodos mountain range have the distinction of being the only places on the island which can claim they are used to the starkly beautiful white, black and gray landscape of winter.

The relatively low temperatures during the last few days brought the first snowfall to the highest peak of Cyprus on Monday morning, allowing the natives and the few lucky visitors in the area to experience this beautiful winter weather phenomenon.
The Troodos National Forest Park was covered in a thin white blanket of snow and frost, offering some very unusual and beautiful scenes of this quintessentially Mediterranean island.
Troodos, the largest mountain range on the island, is located in roughly the center of Cyprus. Its highest peak is Mount Olympus, also known as Chionistra, which means ”The place that gets snow.”
Its altitude rises 1,952 meters (6,404 feet) above the southern Mediterranean Sea.
