In a surprising move, Greece’s Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias went to Libya on Sunday, to meet with the leadership of the opposing to the Government of Tripoli forces, including Field Marshal Khalifa Belqasim Haftar, the chief of the Libyan National Army.
Dendias left Athens using the government’s aircraft and landed in Benghazi.
In a statement issued by Greece’s Foreign Ministry, Dendias said that ”I had the pleasure of visiting Benghazi and meeting with Lieutenant General Khalifa Haftar, the leader of the Libyan National Army (LNA), with whom we had a discussion on broader issues, including the two memoranda signed by the government of Tripoli with Turkey.”
Dendias noted that Haftar’s position is aligned with Greece’s.
”I was very pleased to hear his positions, which coincide with ours on this issue, namely the absolute nullity of these memoranda and that they are harmful they to both the people and society of Libya and, of course, to stability in the region,” the Greek minister said.
It is noted that the forces of Haftar control the vast majority of Libya, with the exception of its capital city, Tripoli.

Tripoli is still controlled by the Government of National Accord, led by Fayez Mustafa al-Sarraj, the man who signed recently the maritime and military agreements with Turkey’s President Erdogan, leading to a blatant violation of Greece’s sovereign maritime rights in the region.
After his short trip to Libya, Foreign Minister Dendias went to Cairo, Egypt, where he discussed with his counterpart, FM Sameh Shoukry the situation in the region and the latest developments after his visit in Benghazi.
