Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, attending the commemorations marking the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, toured the camp today along with his wife Mareva Grabowski Mitsotakis.
“I come to this place with great emotion; a place that has been identified as no other with human barbarism. Indeed, if there is any hell in this world, it is here,” Mitsotakis told reporters.
”I come to honor the memory of the six million Jews who were exterminated by the Nazi regime. Among them are 65,000 Greek Jews who never returned to their homeland,” the Prime Minister said from the Auschwitz camp.

Με ιδιαίτερη συγκίνηση προσέρχομαι σε αυτόν τον χώρο, ο οποίος έχει ταυτιστεί όσο κανένας άλλος με την ανθρώπινη βαρβαρότητα. Πράγματι αν υπάρχει κάπου σε αυτόν τον κόσμο κόλαση, είναι εδώ.Έρχομαι για να τιμήσω τη μνήμη των 6 εκατομμυρίων Εβραίων οι οποίοι εξολοθρεύτηκαν από το ναζιστικό καθεστώς. Ανάμεσα σε αυτούς και 65.000 Έλληνες Εβραίοι, οι οποίοι δεν επέστρεψαν ποτέ στην πατρίδα τους.Ο μεγάλος ιστορικός του ναζισμού Ian Kershaw έγραψε ότι «ο δρόμος προς το Άουσβιτς χτίστηκε από το μίσος, αλλά είναι στρωμένος από την αδιαφορία». Και 75 χρόνια μετά την απελευθέρωση, από τον Ερυθρό Στρατό, αυτού του χώρου θα πρέπει όλοι μας να δώσουμε αυτή την ιερή δέσμευση, να μην ξεχάσουμε ποτέ αυτό το οποίο συνέβη εδώ.Να μην ξεχάσουμε ποτέ ότι το μίσος, οι διακρίσεις, η μισαλλοδοξία δεν έχουν θέση στη Δημοκρατία μας. Και η Δημοκρατία μας θα πρέπει να είναι ισχυρή και να πολεμά με αποφασιστικότητα όλα αυτά τα φαινόμενα.Κάποιοι από τους Έλληνες Εβραίους οι οποίοι βρέθηκαν εδώ και εξεγέρθηκαν την 7η Οκτωβρίου του 1944, στη μεγάλη εξέγερση η οποία έλαβε χώρα στο «κρεματόριο 4», πέθαναν τραγουδώντας τα λόγια του Εθνικού Ύμνου. Κάποιοι ακόμα, στις προσωπικές τους μαρτυρίες οι οποίες διασώθηκαν, έγραψαν ότι πεθαίνουν ευχαριστημένοι διότι γνωρίζουν ότι η πατρίδα τους είναι ήδη ελεύθερη.Τη μνήμη αυτών των Ελλήνων Εβραίων τιμούμε σήμερα, μαζί με την υπόσχεση την οποία δίνουμε όλοι: ποτέ η ανθρωπότητα να μην ξαναζήσει μια τέτοια ανείπωτη τραγωδία.

”The great historian of Nazism Ian Kershaw wrote that ‘the road to Auschwitz was built on hatred but was paved with indifference.’ Seventy-five years after the liberation of this place by the Red Army, we should all give a sacred commitment to never forget what happened here,” the Greek Premier declared.
Mitsotakis went on, adding ”let us never forget that hatred, discrimination, and intolerance have no place in our Republic. Our Democracy must be strong and fight all these phenomena with determination.”
The Prime Minister also made mention of the many heroic stories of Greek Jews who participated — and perished — in an uprising which took place at the Auschwitz camp in 1944.
“Some of the Greek Jews who came here and rebelled on October 7, 1944 in the great uprising that took place at Crematorium 4, died singing the words of our National Anthem. Others, in their personal testimonies who have been rescued, wrote that they died happy because they knew that their country was already free.
“We are honoring the memory of these Greek Jews today,” Mitsotakis said, adding ”along with the promise, which we all give: Let us not allow mankind to live such an untold tragedy ever again.”
Greece’s first couple was guided around the premises of the camp while listening to the individual stories of some of the Greek Jews who died there.
Mitsotakis wrote the following message in Auschwitz’ guest book:
“In memory of all those who lost their lives in this horrible place. Let their memory live forever, to remind us where hatred and discrimination can lead. A special tribute to the 55,000 Greek Jews who died here. Their story will never be forgotten. Kyriakos Mitsotakis.”
