Greek universities recently presented the full slate of their English-language undergraduate and postgraduate programs in the context of new efforts to become more outward-looking and attract students from the rest of the world.
The event, titled “Building International Bridges: Opening Greek Universities to the World,” was organized by the Secretariat General for Public Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Secretariat General for Higher Education in the Ministry of Education.
As Greece’s Minister for Education and Religious Affairs, Niki Kerameus said in her welcome address that university studies for foreigners in Greece go beyond the classics, having a great deal to offer in other fields, including shipping, energy, medicine, refugee issues and others.
The international programs which were presented at the event by a large number of Greek universities include the following.
University of Athens
The University of Athens (UoA), the oldest university in Greece, established in 1837, presented its newly established BA program in Archaeology, History and Literature of Ancient Greece.
The very first complete undergraduate program in the country to be taught entirely in the English language, it is tailored exclusively to non-EU citizens.
Offering students the outstanding opportunity to be close to the very subjects of their course of study at all times, it includes field trips to archaeological sites and museums in Athens and around Greece, and even participation in some archaeological excavations.
The UoA offers twenty-one English-language Masters programs in various academic disciplines such as linguistics, archaeology, neurosciences, and molecular biomedicine and even one Masters in German Philology.
The UoA is also part of the EU Initiative called CIVIS, an alliance of eight European universities which have organized a number of international research programs and clinical trials in collaboration with the universities’ clinics and laboratories.
Hellenic Open University
The Hellenic Open University (HOU), offering distance-learning programs at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, is now running four English-language postgraduate programs, including Business Administration, Management, and Language Education for Refugees and Migrants.
The HOU, which also offers English, French and German-language postgraduate programs in the teaching of the respective languages as a foreign language, is also planning to launch two new postgraduate programs in the areas of Climate Change and Artificial Intelligence.
Aristotle University of Thesaloniki
The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) covers all scientific fields, offering fifteen English-language postgraduate programs in the fields of English and American Studies, Journalism, Social Studies and more, while a new program in Medical Research Methodology has also been launched recently.
University of Crete
The University of Crete (UoC), a research-intensive institution, offers a variety of summer courses in Mathematics, Linguistics, Sociology and Biology as well as four international graduate programs.
Its most prominent graduate programs include “The Molecular Basis of Human Disease,” which is addressed to both clinical and basic scientists, and Biomedical Engineering, as well as a TIME Masters in Business Economics.
The University of Crete is also active in the Erasmus Mundus program, offering international programs in Aquaculture.
Athens University of Economics and Business
The Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) offers six English-language postgraduate programs, including an International MBA, and Masters of Science degree programs in International Shipping, Finance & Management, Business Analytics, Financial Management, and Data Science.
The institution also offers a Masters of Arts degree program in Heritage Management.
The AUEB has exchange agreements with 220 universities in 28 countries in Europe and with thirteen universities in eight countries outside Europe, while more than 400 international exchange students have participated in their 60 English-language courses.
University of Patras
The University of Patras (UoP), in western Greece, offers seventeen English-language postgraduate programs, mainly in natural sciences and engineering. The University also participates in the NANOMED Consortium, within the framework of the Erasmus Mundus program along with other EU universities, which offers a prestigious Masters program in Nanomedicine.
University of the Peloponnese
The University of the Peloponnese offers six English-language postgraduate programs in the domain of the human and social sciences, including Cultural Heritage, Mediterranean studies, Drama and the performing arts, and others.
An international summer school titled “The Epidaurus Lyceum” also offers ancient drama studies in collaboration with the annual Athens and Epidaurus Festival, giving students the unique opportunity for learning and participation in the ancient theater at Epidaurus.
University of Macedonia
The University of Macedonia, located in Thessaloniki, offers three English-language postgraduate programs in the domain of cultural, political and social studies, with a special emphasis on southeastern Europe, Slavic and Oriental studies.
University of the Aegean
The University of the Aegean is a research-oriented multi-disciplinary university with a strong European and international focus. It is considered a network university, spread out across six campuses on six of the islands in the Aegean archipelago (Limnos, Lesvos, Chios, Syros, Samos, and Rhodes).
The University offers three English-language postgraduate programs, a Master of Science in Environmental Sciences, a Masters in Marine Sciences, and a Masters in the subject of Sustainable Tourism Development: Heritage, Environment, Society.
It is also planning to offer Masters programs in Shipping, Air Transport and Business Administration, as well as in the study of “Islands and Sustainability.”
Summer Schools in Communication Systems Engineering, Geography, Social Anthropology and Migration are also organized by the University of the Aegean.
The University of Piraeus
The University of Piraeus, located in the city with the largest port in Greece, has four English-language Masters programs focusing on Shipping Management, Marine Industry, Energy and Business, developing an international orientation through cooperation with other academic institutions and the Greek maritime sector.
University of Thessaly
The University of Thessaly is placing emphasis on building relations with the local community while developing an international orientation through its internationally-educated staff, Visiting Fellows and international students, mainly by its participation in the Erasmus program.
The University offers two English-language Masters programs in the areas of Sports Science and Biosciences.
