Death Toll from Influenza Rises to 53 in Greece

Fifteen additional individuals died in Greece this week from the annual outbreak of influenza during wintertime, raising the total number of fatalities this season to 53, Greeceā€™s National Public Health Organization (EODY) said on Thursday, in its weekly updates on the situation.
In this week’s epidemiological report, the EODY noted that 94.3 percent of those who died belonged to high-risk groups in the Greek population.
Thirty-five of those who died had not been vaccinated, putting their lives at grave risk, since all people belonging to high-risk age and health groups are advised to have the vaccine during Autumn each and every year.
A total of 187 serious, laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza have been recorded in Greece so far this season, a number which is considered to be relatively high.
