Greece’s Region of the North Aegean and its municipalities have called for a general strike on Wednesday, in a fresh protest against the tough stance the government has taken on establishing new migrant detention centers there.
The decision to strike was announced by North Aegean regional governor Kostas Moutzouris at a meeting held in Mytilene, Lesvos which also decided on the establishment of a Coordinating Body for addressing the situation on the islands.
The same announcement denounced what it called ”the barbarous and extremely aggressive government action to send riot police to the islands of Lesvos and Chios to impose their violent transformation (of the islands) into new prisons, in defiance to the will and dignity of the islanders.”
The announcement also stridently condemned the “attacks against defenseless civilians and the blocking of the roads.”
The region and its municipalities invited all the residents of Lesvos to gather together in Sappho Square on Tuesday afternoon at 16:00 local time and to move toward the Karavas area later on.
The Karavas area is where the Greek government intends to build its new, enclosed migrant detention center.
“It is a day of shame for all, and mostly for those who ordered these actions. It is a shame for the islanders to be beaten and to suffer from tear gas. Not even the military junta did these things,” Moutzouris said angrily.
It should be noted that the Regional Governor of the North Aegean is politically affiliated with Greece’s ruling New Democracy party.
