Stelios Petsas, the Greek government’s spokesperson said on Saturday that Greece has faced ”a massive organized illegal attempt to violate its borders and has managed to endure.”
Following a meeting held at Maximos Mansion in Athens, Petsas announced Greece’s steps to deal with the extraordinary situation at its borders with Turkey.
“The government is determined to do whatever it takes to safeguard its borders,” Petsas declared.
Petsas noted that Greece has sent a direct message to Ankara, by strengthening its land and sea border controls.
A total of fifty-two vessels of Greece’s Coast Guard and Navy are currently patrolling the country’s sea border with Turkey.
It is noted that the Greek Premier Kyriakos Mitsotakis had already called several leaders of the region and the EU to inform them about the urgent situation.
The Government’s spokesperson also informed reporters that Greece has already managed to stop more than 4,000 individuals who tried to enter the country illegally, noting that 66 of them who did cross the border were immediately arrested.
