Child Drowns as Greece Records More Than One Thousand New Migrant Arrivals

A tragic incident took place in the early hours of Monday, as a young child drowned off the Greek island of Lesvos.
The boat that the child had been on board of capsized. The Greek authorities managed to rescue all 48 onboard; however, one of the children was declared dead, after being rushed to Lesvos’ hospital.
More than one thousand refugees and migrants, thought to be as many as 1,300, reached the shores of Greece’s Eastern Aegean islands in the period from Sunday to Monday noon.
According to the Greek Coast Guard, two search and rescue operations occurred in the sea surrounding Lesvos, with a total of 89 individuals being rescued.
Three similar operations took place off Chios, with 43 people being rescued, and another one was undertaken off the island of Farmakonissi, where 32 people were rescued by Greek forces.
At the same time, between Sunday and Monday, a total of 20 different incidents of boats landing on European shores took place, with a total of 813 new arrivals in Greece.
423 of them reached the island of Lesvos, 252 arrived on Chios, 85 on Samos, 36 on Farmakonissi, and 17 on Megisti, Castellorizo.
Meanwhile, a total of 9,877 individuals were stopped from entering Greek soil between Sunday and Monday morning in Evros, Greek Reporter learns.
EU President to Pay Urgent Visit to Greece
As the situation continues to be extraordinarily tense, the President of the European Council Charles Michel announced on Sunday evening that he will be in Greece on Tuesday.

In a tweet, the leader of the Union’s Council said that he supports Greece’s efforts to protect European borders and announced that he will visit Evros along with Premier Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Tuesday.
