Frontex Accepts Greek Request, Pledges Immediate Border Support for Greece

The European Border and Coast Guard Agency, also known as Frontex, announced on Monday that it has accepted Greece’s request for extraordinary assistance to guard its Eastern land and sea border.
“Given the quickly developing situation at the Greek external borders with Turkey, my decision is to accept to launch the rapid border intervention requested by Greece. It is part of the Frontex mandate to assist a Member State confronted with an exceptional situation, requesting urgent support with officers and equipment from all EU Member States and Schengen Associated Countries,” said Frontex Executive Director Fabrice Leggeri.
Late last night Frontex received a request from the Greek government to launch a rapid intervention at its external borders. We are looking into how to best support Greece in the shortest time possible,” the European Agency noted.

Currently, Frontex operates with personnel which is supplied by individual European Union Member States. Beginning in 2021, it will have its own dedicated personnel which will stand ready to assist any member state which has the EU’s external border in its territory.
Greece requested a rapid border intervention for the current unprecedented situation.

This scheme is designed to bring immediate assistance to a member state which is under urgent and exceptional pressures along its external borders, especially related to large numbers of non-EU nationals who are attempting to enter the territory of a member state illegally.
