Greek Police Arrest Dozens Who Illegally Crossed Border at Evros

Greek security forces have launched a manhunt for migrants who illegally crossed over from the Turkish border since Friday when thousands massed on the Turkish side of the Evros River.
Greek Reporter filmed an incident at the small border town of Kastanies where police stopped and arrested two suspected illegal immigrants.

According to the Greek authorities, more than 24,000 attempts to cross the border have been prevented since Saturday.
A total of 4,354 individuals were prevented from illegally entering Greek territory in the Evros region between 6:00 and 18:00 on Monday. Authorities also arrested 42 illegal migrants in the area, most of them from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Morocco.

The total number of illegal entries averted between 6:00 on Saturday and Monday evening was 24,303, while 183 people were arrested and taken to detention centers for migrants, while those convicted of illegally entering Greece were taken to prisons.
Those who had undergone expedited trials for illegally entering Greece on Monday were sentenced to four years imprisonment without suspension for appeal and fined 10,000 euros each.

Meanwhile, the Greek Coast Guard has rescued 115 migrants and refugees in three separate incidents over the last 24 hours in the Aegean.
Coast Guard spokesmen said that the three incidents were recorded in the seas around the islands of Lesvos, Leros and Kos.
A total of 47 migrants and refugees were rescued off Lesvos, 35 off Leros and 33 off the island of Kos.
Over that same period of time, 404 migrants and refugees arrived by dinghy on the islands of Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Agathonissi, Farmakonissi, Kos, Symi and Megisti.
