EU Coalition to Relocate 1500 Migrant Children From Greece

A voluntary coalition of European Union countries will take in as many as 1,500 migrant children currently living in limbo on the Greek islands as a measure of humanitarian support, the German government announced Sunday night.
“On a European level in recent days, talks have been taking place on a humanitarian solution, with the objective of organizing the care of these children in the framework of a ‘coalition of volunteers’,” the German government said in a press release.
The statement did not specifythe names of the countries involved.
“We want to help Greece face the difficult humanitarian situation of 1,000 to 1,500 children on the islands,” said the spokesmen of parties belonging to the government coalition of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, following an hours-long meeting on Sunday evening.
“These are children that, due to an illness, are in urgent need of care, or are unaccompanied children younger than 14 years old, mainly females,” the spokesmen explained.
