Thousands of Greeks showed their gratitude to health personnel working tirelessly on the coronavirus frontline by applauding from their balconies on Sunday at 9 p.m.
“We applaud for five minutes the people who are fighting for us. The health personnel. We want our applause to be heard at every hospital so they can take courage for the days to come,” says a message that spread through Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms.

Greeks were called on to follow the example of Spain, where families came out on to balconies and others reached out of windows to cheer and clap amid shouts of “Viva los medicos” – “Long Live Doctors!”
The spontaneous act of gratitude came at 10 p.m. on Saturday, just minutes after Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez delivered a televised address to the nation informing them that everyone would be confined to their homes except to make short trips to buy supplies.
