Athens Under Lockdown: A Bird’s Eye View of a Deserted City

Footage captured by a drone shows Athens almost deserted during the strict lockdown imposed on Monday, March 23, to prevent the further spread of the coronavirus.

On Sunday, Greek Minister of Development and Investment Adonis Georgiadis announced that the lockdown will last “way beyond” April 6, the original end-date envisaged when the lockdown was applied.

Exempted from the ban are people going to and from work, going out to buy food and medicine, visiting a doctor or a person who needs care and those who either exercise alone or in pairs. Those who are taking their pet out for a walk are also exempt.

This who are also free of the ban’s strictures are state officials, security and medical personnel and staff from civil protection, health services, security forces, and the armed forces.
