Greece Confiscates Tons of Contraband Antiseptic Gels, Masks from China and Turkey

Greece’s Economic Crime Prosecution Corps (SDOE) announced on Wednesday that they have confiscated tons of antiseptic gel, face masks and other personal protective equipment originating from China and Turkey.
The SDOE’s Attica division carried out a search on a company which, among other things, trades in personal protective and personal care products.
The Greek authorities seized more than four tons of antiseptic gels in the raid after finding that they were not circulating in the country legally. This makes the state completely unable to verify their quality and safety.
From that company alone, SDOE officers additionally confiscated a total of 2,308 face masks, since the owners had likewise failed to provide legal documents for their importation into the country.
Regarding the hand sanitizers specifically, the SDOE noted that they had been imported as “cosmetic products” rather than as actual sanitizers, which require special authorization from Greece’s National Medicines Organization, or EOF.
It is noted that the Greek authorities have intensified their checks on all such commodities, since the demand for these products has soared after the outbreak of the coronavirus.
