About 5,000 people in a Roma settlement in Nea Smyrni, Larissa were put in quarantine on Thursday evening after 20 people were found to be infected by the covid-19 coronavirus.
On Thursday afternoon, a 32-year-old Roma man tested positive for the virus and was put in hospital. Greece’s Citizen Protection Ministry, along with the National Health Organization (EODY) acted immediately, testing 29 people who had come in contact  with the infected man. Twenty of them tested positive.
The authorities put the Roma settlement and surrounding areas in quarantine. Additionally, local authorities, in collaboration with EODY, reopened an area health center that had been closed and placed the 20 infected people in that facility for treatment.
According to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, all the individuals who belong to vulnerable groups will be removed from the settlement and will be placed in a hotel. Health authorities will also continue testing all the other contacts of the 32-year-old man.
