Greece Confirms Migrants Are Gathering Along Turkish Coast

A Greek government minister confirmed on Monday that migrants have been gathering on the Turkish coast opposite the Aegean islands, with the apparent intention of crossing over into Greece.
Greek Migration Minister Notis Mitarakis said that “some migrants have gathered on the Turkish coast; without any confirmation, however, as the Greek newspapers have written, that they are carriers of coronavirus.”
Earlier reports suggested that some of the migrants were infected by the COVID-19 coronavirus.
The Minister added that Greek authorities would do everything possible to prevent any crossings by boats smuggling people over the Aegean.
“We remain on alert for the guarding of national borders but also the protection of reception centers from the coronavirus,” he said.
Any migrants who do manage to arrive on the Greek islands will be put under quarantine for a total of fourteen days.
