There were emotional scenes in the Thriasio Hospital of Athens and the Venizeleio Hospital of Crete on Monday as staff cheered two patients out of the intensive care units (ICUs).
“Faces smile under the masks,” physician Ioannis Koutsodimitropoulos wrote on Facebook as he upload the video of a patient known only by his first name as “Giorgos” is led out of the Thriasio ICU.
He notes that this is his first patient to be released from the ICU since the pandemic had begun. The doctor adds that there have been no deaths in the hospital, as all patients transferred to Thriasio since March 20 are alive “and battling the virus.”
Koutsodimitropoulos appeals to the Greek people to stay at home and show confidence in the country’s public health service and its employees.

In similar scenes, a 63-year-old woman was also discharged from the ICU of Venizeleio Hospital in Heraklion, Crete. Anestis Kioulpalis, the head of the ICU, wrote on Facebook that “the coronavirus patient’s chances were slim when she arrived at the hospital.”
“However, thanks to the efforts of the nurses and doctors and all the employees in the hospital, who displayed self-sacrifice and professionalism, she was offered the chance of survival,” Kioupalis said.
