Curfew Violations Rise as Greece Tries to Balance Between Lockdown and Orthodox Easter

The Greek police reported on Good Friday a total of 81 new fines imposed for unauthorised movement of citizens outside their county of residence on the previous day, on a day when normally millions of people would be outdoors attending church liturgies.
The violations of the ban on travel were recorded in the regions of Attica, Central Macedonia, Thessaloniki, West Macedonia, Western Greece, Thessaly, and Epirus.
It is noted that fines of 300 euros were imposed for these violations, while police removed the license plates of 56 vehicles.
Since the start of this measure, a total of 535 violations of this type have been confirmed and an equal number of 300-euro fines imposed, while in 309 cases the number plates have been removed for 60 days.
In the meantime, Greek authorities have decided not to impose a complete and universal curfew on the weekend of Orthodox Easter; however, scenes of people gathering in masses in supermarkets have caused great concern in this time of strict quarantine measures and social distancing.
Additionally, individual priests across the country, acting recklessly in some cases, have been reported by media outlets as opening churches and even allowing people inside in some cases.
The police have been patrolling and enforcing the curfew across Greece, and are under strict orders to not allow any easing of the measures. These even more draconian measures were taken due to the special circumstances regarding the celebration of Easter.
