Magnitude 6.0 Earthquake Strikes South of Crete Causing Mini Tsunami

An earthquake measuring 6 on the Richter scale hit the sea area south of Crete on Saturday afternoon.
According to the Geodynamic Institute of Athens, the tremor occurred at 4 p.m. local time and the epicenter was about 60 kilometers (39 miles) south of the city of Ierapetra.
It occurred at a depth of 15 kilometers (9 miles).
Reports say that the quake was felt in many parts of southern Crete, but until now there has been no information on damage or injuries.
An aftershock with a preliminary magnitude of 4.4 occurred 10 minutes later about 102 kilometers (63 miles) away from the island, the institute reported.
The earthquake caused a mini tsunami, Greek seismologists and international scientists confirmed later on the day.
Efthymios Lekkas president of the Organization for Earthquake Planning & Protection (OASP) said in a statement that the tsunami was initially triggered by the withdrawal of seawater about 20 minutes after the earthquake and that the phenomenon was been repeated 3-4 times. The change in the sea level was about half a meter.
