Athens "Great Walk" Promises to Transform Greek Capital's Historic Center

The Athens City Council is developing plans for a major overhaul of the historic center of the Greek capital by allowing people more space to walk, run and cycle through city streets and designating more green space for residents to enjoy.
The Council voted unanimously on Monday to construct an Athens “Great Walk”, a 6.8 km (4.2 mile) pedestrian and cycling path which would include all major attractions of the city, including the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora and the districts of Plaka and Monastiraki.

In many parts of central Athens new bus and trolley lanes, as well as bicycle lanes, will be created. Not only the historic areas of Plaka and the Commercial Triangle, but Herodou Attikou, Mitropoleos, Ermou and Athinas Streets as well will be converted into car-free zones.
The ambitious project, which is due to begin by June, will be completed by the year 2022. Authorities believe that upon its completion the “Great Walk” would be one of Europe’s most beautiful urban walks.
National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) professor George Yannis said during the presentation of the plan to the municipal councilors that 50,000 square meters (538,195 sure feet) of free public space will be made accessible to citizens and visitors upon the completion of the project.

“The Great Walk would not only change the appearance of the city center, but also our daily lives. It is important to love this city, not just to live in it,” Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis declared.
The mayor went on to state that this is “a visionary project, which will re-introduce us to the city of Athens.”
