A giant-size banner was placed on Saturday on the facade of the Thessaloniki City Hall in memory of the killing of some 353,000 Greeks of Pontus by the Turks in 1919.
The banner shows a map of Pontus and an eagle in front of it, along with the blood-stained date May19, 1919 and a verse reading “I lost my homeland, I cried and I was in pain”. At the bottom, there is the message “Memorial Day for the Genocide of the Greeks of Pontus. For our 353,000 unburied ancestors who demand justice.”
The banner was placed in the presence of Thessaloniki Mayor, Konstantinos Zervas, and a number of Pontic associations, as a tribute to the darkest page in the history of Pontic Hellenism.
The City of Thessaloniki will hold a memorial service in honor of the victims of the Genocide of Pontic Hellenism, at the Monument to the Genocide of Pontians in Agia Sofia Square, on Tuesday, May 19, at 10 am.
