As the number of coronavirus cases continues to decrease, Greece will open itself once again for foreign tourists on June 15 — initially accepting visitors from only twenty countries, however.
Greek Tourism Minister Haris Theoharis announced on Wednesday that “Foreign tourism will start on June 15, where the arrival of visitors from approximately twenty countries will be free (from restrictions).”
The restrictions for some exempted countries will be lifted on July 1, while another group of countries will be added on July 15. This process, however, will depend on Covid-19 pandemic developments as time goes along.
Residents from the following twenty countries that are judged by Greece to have shown positive epidemiological data will be allowed to enter the country as of June 15:
Cyprus, Israel, Germany, China, Australia, Japan, Denmark, Austria, Bulgaria, Serbia, Romania, Albania, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Norway.
While the Greek government had initially announced that foreign visitors will have to test negative for Covid-19 five days before traveling to Greece, that restriction has now been lifted, based on the current epidemiological data.
Health authorities will, however, conduct random testing on travelers arriving from abroad. Health protocols will apply in the realms of travel, accommodation and dining in tourist areas.
Speaking on health measures taken in tourist destinations, the Minister said that they are divided based on risk level — low, medium or high.
Health facilities in tourist areas will undergo improvements accordingly, based on risk levels, while the enhanced measures to be taken will accordingly be based on the same risk.
Doctors will be readily available at all tourist destinations, and in case there are instances of coronavirus infection, quarantine procedures will apply.
Residents of countries having what Greece deems unfavorable current epidemiological characteristics will not be allowed to visit Greece before July 15. United Kingdom residents, for instance, who may have had plans to visit Greece this summer, will not be allowed for the time being, as Theoharis explained on ITV news:
