In a sign pointing to a definitive recovery in Greek tourism, Lufthansa will double the number of its flights to Athens beginning on June 15.

“By restoring a part of our flying service in June, the Lufthansa Group is also restoring a part of its activity linking Greece with its global network again. This constitutes an important contribution and support for the restarting of industry and commerce, and mainly tourism for Greece,” said Konstantinos Tzevelekos, general manager for sales for the Lufthansa Group in Greece and Cyprus.

Also, while discussing current air travel traffic in Greece, Transport and Infrastructure Minister Kostas Karamanlis noted on Tuesday that 230 aircraft had landed at Athens International Airport (AIA) on Monday, of which 75 percent were domestic flights.

This number stands in stark contrast to the 730 airplanes which touched down at the airport on the same date in 2019.

Karamanlis made his comments during an interview on SKAI TV on Tuesday.

This move by Lufthansa reflects a gradual improvement in air travel, according to the Minister, while he pointed out that restrictions on flights and mandatory quarantines will continue to be enforced until June 15.

That is when restrictions on international flights will be lifted for Athens and Thessaloniki’s international airport, and a further lessening of strictures will occur again on July 1 when flights from abroad will be permitted to land at all Greek airports.
