Greece Warns of New Lockdown as Mykonos Revelers Flout Coronavirus Rules

Over the weekend, Greek health authorities ordered a popular bar on Mykonos to shut down for a total of 60 days for breaking the social distancing rules imposed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
They also imposed a fine of 20,000 euros on the beach bar at the famous resort of Ftelia, since it allowed customers to linger at the bar counter. The rules stipulate that customers are allowed to purchase their drinks from a bar, but they then must quickly move away to more open areas, maintaining appropriate social distancing.
The crackdown occurred on the very first day after the long lockdown was lifted, when beach bars were finally allowed to serve alcohol and play music for patrons. Reports say hundreds of young people, including both locals and visitors from the mainland, flocked to the bar.
The Pentecost public holiday on Monday had people taking advantage of the three-day weekend to go back to the popular island to… resume the party from last summer.
Luxury yachts are now docked at the island’s marinas, bringing the rich and famous to their favorite island destination once again. Little Venice, Matogiannia, the island’s many golden beaches and all the usual popular Mykonos hotspots were filled with happy vacationers and revelers.
Warning of local lockdown
However, Greek government spokesman Stelios Petsas warned on Monday that national authorities will impose a new lockdown in regions which flout the new coronavirus-imposed rules.
“We will re-impose the lockdown locally if we see a problem somewhere, whether it’s in a neighborhood, or a health facility or a school. It may even concern a geographical area, an island or a prefecture. Everything is on the table. The coronavirus has not disappeared. We should not relax our precautions,” he added, speaking in an interview on SKAI Television.
Unfortunately, similar incidents have also occurred in other parts of Greece following the easing of the nationwide lockdown and the start of the tourist season. The following video is from a bar district in the town of Nafpaktos.
