Greek authorities on Thursday ordered a village near the city of Xanthi, in northeast Greece, into quarantine after a spike in the number of coronavirus cases there.
Greece’s General Secretariat for Civil Protection announced restrictions in the broader region after 15 coronavirus infections were reported in one day. At the same time it also imposed a curfew on people living in the village of Echinos, to which most of the cases were traced.
Residents of Echinos will be prohibited from leaving their homes between the hours of 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. for the next seven days, during which period all primary schools and kindergartens will also be closed and the use of face masks will be compulsory in public places.
In the broader region of Xanthi the use of face masks will be compulsory in all shops and other businesses.
Deputy Minister for Civil Protection Nikos Hardalias and the government’s special adviser on the coronavirus crisis, Sotiris Tsiodras, has traveled to Xanthi to coordinate efforts to control the spread of the virus.
Following a recent spike in cases of Covid-19, the authorities had said they would reintroduce restrictions to contain localized outbreaks.
A total of 20 new infections were announced on Thursday in Greece, bringing the nationwide total to 3,088, including all those who have recovered, while the nation’s total death toll remains at 183.
