Greece Escalates Crackdown on Clubs Breaking Coronavirus Rules

Greek authorities ordered five nightclubs in Attica to close down over the weekend for overcrowding after police raided their premises on Friday night.
The businesses, located in the port city of Piraeus and the Kerameikos and Gazi districts of central Athens, were fined a total of 15,000 euros, according to police sources who did not specify for how long the establishments would be forced to remain closed.
The shutdowns followed the closure last Thursday of a nightclub in Alimos where more than 1,000 people had attended a party the night before.
Last weekend, Greek health authorities ordered a popular bar on the island of Mykonos to shut down for a total of 60 days for breaking the social distancing rules imposed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
Earlier this week, Greek government spokesman Stelios Petsas warned that a new lockdown will be imposed in regions that flout the new coronavirus-imposed rules.
“We will re-impose the lockdown locally if we see a problem somewhere, whether it’s in a neighborhood, or a health facility or a school. It may even concern a geographical area, an island, or a prefecture. Everything is on the table. The coronavirus has not disappeared. We should not relax our precautions,” he added.
