An unusual case occurred recently when a forty-eight-year-old burglar called the police on himself after breaking into a restaurant on the Greek island of Rhodes.
The robbery took place during the early morning hours of Friday, June 19, when the man, who is a resident of the island, managed to enter a store and restaurant in the center of the city. He had intended to break in to steal some food since he had nothing to eat.
After seeing surveillance cameras within the establishment, however, the man knew that he would eventually be arrested by police in a matter of hours. Thus, he decided to make things easier by calling them himself — and within minutes, officers from the Rhodes Security sub-directorate was at the scene.
“I am a burglar. I broke in in order to steal, but I regretted it. I’m waiting for you to arrest me here,” the robber told police, who listened in astonishment.
The restaurant’s owner, George Leventis, was informed of the attempted robbery and later confirmed the veracity of what had occurred himself. When the robber realized that there was no food around, he stole a few euros from the cash register.
Leventis told police that he wanted to speak to the man, saying that he felt sorry for him and for the predicament that he supposedly was in.
The restaurant owner ended up giving the forty-eight-year-old man 20 euros ($22) for him to buy some food for himself. Despite the owner showing the burglar generosity, the authorities are still expecting to file charges against the man and bring him to justice for the break-in.
