Over three decades since its debut on the silver screen, Amorgos, the Greek island which charmed the global cinephile community through 1988’s cult Luc Besson film The Big Blue, is again set as the alluring background of a new international co-production.
Filming is underway for German director/scriptwriter Nana Neul’s feature length movie “Töchter” (Daughters), based on the best-selling novel by Lucy Fricke. This is one of the first international co-productions to resume post-lockdown, thanks to Greece’s successful dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic which allowed flights from Europe to resume last week.
“Hooray! After the corona lockdown we are back on the road and continue shooting our co-production TÖCHTER. Fingers crossed that our great cast and crew on Amorgos stay safe and healthy,” one the film’s co-producers, Heimatfilm, commented on their official Facebook page.

Italy’s Simila is co-producing the project alongside Athens-based Heretic Productions –which secured funding from EKOME (Greece’s National Centre of Audiovisual Media and Communication) for the film’s local operations. The movie has also received funding from Germany’s Film und Medienstiftung NRW, BKM and DFFF as well as from the Italian organization MIBAC.
According to the official permits granted by Amorgos’ local authorities, filming will take place between June 20 and July 10 on the beach and port of Aegiali, on the northeast part of the island. “The movie sits in the comedy/drama category and focuses on the complex relation between father and daughter, describing a road trip which starts from Germany and ends up in Amorgos”, according to the permit information.
Starring in the film are Birgit Minichmayr, Alexandra Maria Lara, Josef Bierbichler, Giorgio Colangeli. Members of the Greek cast are Andreas Constantinou, Michalis Sarandis, Alexandros Milonas, Zoe Rigopoulou and Andreas Verykios. 142 residents of Amorgos are participating in the filming as extras.
