Two men from Bulgaria have been taken into custody after allegedly attempting to kidnap a fourteen-year-old boy in Pyrgos. The crime occurred on Thursday, June 25.
The men were arrested on Friday after the potential kidnapping target recognized one of the suspects after police had apprehended them.
According to local media, the boy was walking to tutorial school on Thursday morning when the men, in a black van, approached him. They had reportedly told the student that his mother had sent them to pick him up and bring him home.
The boy immediately knew that something was wrong when one of the suspects tried speaking to him in broken Greek. In an effort to buy time, the boy told them “Yes, in two minutes,” and then ran to the school when one of the Bulgarian men exited the car.
Investigators were informed shortly afterward and police were sent to apprehend the two foreign men, who were brothers, aged nineteen and twenty-three.
After closing off the area, officers were able to take the men into custody after their search led them to the town of Amaliada on Thursday afternoon. The black van used in the alleged abduction attempt was also seized by police as well.
According to Mega TV, the two men had recently moved to Pyrgos from Bulgaria and were working as couriers. Local authorities were shocked by the crime, especially since it occurred just two weeks after a ten-year-old girl had gone missing in Thessaloniki.
A thirty-three-year-old woman has been arrested after admitting to that kidnapping, and the girl was released days later. Police are still investigating the motives behind the crime as well as a criminal ring that may have been involved.
Police are continuing their investigation in Pyrgos regarding the attempted kidnapping of the fourteen-year-old boy. The two Bulgarian brothers were granted a deadline by which they must testify, next Tuesday.
