Greek Opposition Leader Tsipras Calls for Clarification on Turkish Threat

Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, main opposition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras called on Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to officially brief the Greek nation and the political party leaders on the latest developments concerning Turkey, while accusing him of acting to “divide the Greek people even at a crucial moment for our national interests.”
“Since noon yesterday, the entire Turkish fleet has come out into the southeast Aegean.” Tsipras stated. “More than 40 Turkish warships are south of Rhodes and west of Kastellorizo, clearly to operate supportively for the explorations of the Turkish survey vessel Oruc Reis, which were announced in a Navtex of the Turkish side in an area of the Greek continental shelf. Not in disputed waters.”
The former Greek PM also accused the government of carrying on as usual, as if nothing were happening, “to send your political opponents to trial and divide the Greek people even at a crucial moment for our national interests.”
Tsipras noted that, since Tuesday, the Defense Ministry had been broadcasting alert warnings throughout the day and all the media were flooded with press leaks but the Greek people and political parties offered no official information.
“While the entire Turkish fleet is out of its naval stations and, as we are informed, the Greek fleet is also leaving its naval station, Mr. Mitsotakis is refusing not only to brief the political leaders and the Greek people on what is happening but refusing to even convene the Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defence (KYSEA), the government body responsible for coordinating a crisis situation and taking decisions,” Tsipras charged.
A level-headed approach, he added, called for the convening of KYSEA in the presence of the chief of the armed forces to coordinate the country’s operational plan, in the presence of the Prime Minister and the other ministers responsible. He also questioned the message being sent to the other side by the government’s behavior.
The opposition leader urged Prime Minister Mitsotakis, albeit at the last minute, “to act with seriousness and responsibility: to brief parliament, convene KYSEA and ask – again – for an emergency meeting of the European Council in order to decide – even after the fact – on sanctions against Turkey for its constant and repeated provocative behavior in contravention of international law.”
