Fake National Defense SMS Message Alarms Greek Public

Members of the public in Greece were disturbed and alarmed on Thursday afternoon after many of them received messages on their mobile phones purportedly telling them to “mobilize” due to a “military incident” which had occurred.
Greek citizens were told to report to the nearest  police station, where they would be given papers by the Defense General Staff. The messages were very realistic-looking and appeared to come from Greece’s Ministry of National Defense.

The Greek police accordingly sent out their own message urging the public to disregard the malicious message which appeared to come from the General Staff. Calling it an “obviously deceptive message,” an investigation has now been launched into who actually sent the sms, according to another statement the police issued late Thursday.
The Cyber Crime Prosecution Directorate will be responsible for the further investigation into the incident.
This week has seen tensions ramp up considerably in the nation as a result of Turkey announcing that it would conduct oil and gas drilling in the waters atop Greece’s continental shelf.
There have been reports in the German newspaper Bild that an actual confrontation between Greece and Turkey was only averted by action taken by German chancellor Angela Merkel, and the nation’s citizens have been on edge for the past several days.
