EU Approves 130 Million Euros for Refugee Facilities on Greek Islands

The European Commission announced on Monday the disbursement of a total of 130 million euros designated for the construction of three controlled-access refugee and migrant facilities on the Greek islands of Samos, Leros and Kos.
The funds have now been officially approved by the European Commission’s Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF).
In a letter to the Migration Ministry, the European Commission said that  “it welcomes the Ministry’s efforts to address the migration crisis in Greece and fully recognizes the urgent need for this financial support.”
The AMIF decision came only after a positive nod received from a meeting at the European Commission. Greek Migration Minister Notis Mitarakis had requested more than 132 million euros from Greek coffers two months ago to effect the construction of the necessary facilities since any decision from the EU had yet to be forthcoming at that point.
