Greek authorities have imposed new, much stricter measures for curbing the spread of theĀ coronavirusĀ  as the numbers of cases continue to increase at an alarming level, reaching a record 203 cases on Monday and 196 on Tuesday, the highest figures since the start of the outbreak.
The new emergency measures which went into effect on Tuesday will apply until August 23. They include the closing of bars and restaurants at midnight, along with catering services, and wedding parties at estates, among other such events. Additionally, all public events where the participants are typically standing – like concerts, fairs etc. — are now suspended.
Regarding arrivals of people from abroad, the presentation of a negative molecular test for Covid-19 is now mandatory for those who wish to enter Greece through land borders as well as for those traveling by air from Sweden, the Czech Republic, Belgium, Spain and the Netherlands.

Also, beginning on August 16, only 750 people per day will be allowed to enter Greece from the Kakavia border crossing from Albania. Furthermore, the 85th Thessaloniki International Trade Fair, major annual event scheduled for the beginning of September, has been completely cancelled.
On Tuesday, 82 of the new infections appeared in Attica, where the potential of spreading throughout the wider Athens area is generating great concern among the country’s health authorities. The same worry is spreading in Greece’s second largest urban center, Thessaloniki.
Speaking on ANT1 television, epidemiologist Nikos Sypsas said that the majority of people currently in ICUs around the nation are no longer old or ailing people; the number of younger individuals — under 40 — is increasing dramatically, a trend that the scientific community is particularly concerned about.
