Just one day before a special meeting of the European Union Security Council, it was reported that Greek Prime Minister spoke on the telephone with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday.
Greek media are reporting that the Prime Minister discussed Turkey’s recent escalation of illegal oil and gas exploration in the eastern Mediterranean. No other details are known at the present time.
It had been reported earlier by Turkey’s official Anadolu News Αgency that Merkel had spoken previously with Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan, when they had discussed pressing issues in the region, including the difficult situation in the eastern Mediterranean which presented itself this week.
According to the Turkish news agency, Erdogan told the German chancellor that Turkey is “in favor of dialogue under international law.”
The same news agency had stated earlier that the Turkish leader also referred to what had taken place this week in the Eastern Mediterranean vis-á-vis Greece. He was quoted as saying that the escalation in tensions is due to actions on the part of Greece, not his country.
“The only solution in the Mediterranean is dialogue and negotiation, Turkey is not seeking ‘adventure’,” he reportedly said.
In the meantime, Erdogan was quoted by Reuters as also charging late on Thursday that Greece had “attacked” a Turkish ship, and stating that afterward, Greece had ‘got their first answer today’ for what had taken place.
There is no confirmation that any such incident had taken place whatsoever, either with the Greek Navy ship Limnos or any other vessel, as has been rumored in the Turkish media.
