Greece Announces 254 More Cases of Coronavirus, Two Deaths in Last 24 Hours

Greece’s Public Heath Authority, EODY, announced on Friday that there have been 254 new cases of the coronavirus detected across the nation in the last 24 hours and two elderly women have succumbed with the virus.
This brings the total number of those who have died in Greece with the coronavirus to 223. Seventy-seven of the fatalities, or 34.5%, were female. The average age of all deceased Greek citizens was 77 years; nearly all of them, or 96%, had an underlying disease and/or were aged 70 years and over.
Only twenty of the new cases were detected at the country’s borders and other entrance points; the rest were of domestic origin.
So far, including all those who have recovered from the virus, a total of 6,632 people in Greece have contracted the coronavirus; just over half, or 555, have been male.
A total of 1592, or 24.0%, of all the cases are considered t have been contracted from travel abroad and 3,207, or 48.4%, are related to an already-known case.
Currently, 22 patients around the country are being treated by intubation in ICUs. The average age of this individuals is 63 years. Just seven of these people, or 31.8%, are female.
Over half of them, or 59.1%, suffer from an underlying disease or are age 70 or over. Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 136 patients across the country have been successfully released from ICUs.
Earlier today,Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis spoke to the nation from Maximos Mansion, encouraging everyone to take the anti-coronavirus measures more seriously in light of the increased number of infections seen across the country.
In addition, Undersecretary of Citizen Defense Nikos Hardalias announced a host of new, stricter measures in the war agains the coronavirus.
These included, among many others, a ban on the operation of bars, entertainment venues and sit-down restaurants in the entire Attica region, including islands in the Saronic Gulf, from midnight until 7:00 in the morning. These new measures will be in force until August 24, at which time they will be revisited.
